Concert!

Announcing the first QMU Staff-Student Concert in the new campus!

It has not been the best of years for music at QMU, but we have managed to put together a few brilliant acoustic groups for what I'm sure will be another memorable concert. Hopefully both staff and students will find time to come together for an enjoyable social event. Those who came to the concerts at Corstorphine Campus will know that these concerts are not to be missed, and so far all concerts have been standing-room only - so don't miss out! Support your friends and colleagues! Details below, any questions: music@qmu.ac.uk

Guitar Ensemble to start!

The Beginners Guitar Ensemble will start on Monday 18th February in Studio 3 which is in the new Performance/Sports/Students Union building.

Time: 12.15 to 1pm

This group is for beginners or post beginners. We'll learn a few chords to songs. Bring songs which you would want to learn, but to start things off we will be learning 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd. There is a Wiki page devoted to it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Home_Alabama_(song)
and chords and a video here:
http://www.guitarchordsmagic.com/guitar-song-chords/sweet-home-alabama.html

We'll do a simplified version, unless you feel you can play the main riff...

Website

I'm working on a new website which I'll be able to have more control over and update more frequently. I'll post the address here soon.

UPDATE

Well, we have finally managed to get some groups up and running:

Baroque Ensemble: a great turnout - four (!) flutes, three violins, two recorders, cello, harpsichord, baroque guitar, and three sopranos, one doubling mezzo. I get the feeling this is going to be an excellent ensemble.

Recorder Group: five of us, with two more to join in a couple of weeks time. All five pitch ranges are in use, from bass to sopranino. Three of us are complete beginners, with the remainder varying in experience. Looking forward to some good consort music.

Acoustic Music Group: I lost count - eight or nine participants, three singers, mandolin, guitars. It would be nice to have a bass and a fiddle as well. A great start. Blues and folk/country.

Traditional Music Group: eight participants, fiddles, guitars, keyboards, voices, percussion. The more the merrier. Traditional jigs and reels, with some songs.

So, a good week. We tried to get the Guitar Class for beginners and 'post beginners' off the ground, but it failed at the first hurdle - space and time were against us. I hope to have good news regarding space and time soon.

As ever, I'm impressed with the standard of the playing, the willingness to take part, and the courage of beginners to give it a go. Brilliant.
