QMU Concert for Bangladesh

QMU Concert for Bangladesh
The recent cyclone in Bangladesh left thousands dead and millions homeless. Please come to the following lunchtime concert by staff and students of QM.
Date: Friday 7th December
Room: 3169
Time: 12.30 to 1.00
Admission: There will be a MINIMUM entry donation of £1.
There is no maximum limit!

The Star-Studded Lineup!
Sumi Halder - singing Bengali folk songs
Victoria Bennett - jazz songs from 'The Great American Songbook)

Tessa Ransford - recitation of her own poetry about the floods in Pakistan and Britain
Rob MacKillop (guitars) - the roots of flamenco on a copy of a baroque guitar from 1690, and music from the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV
… a more varied lineup would be hard to imagine! Spread the word!
From the DEC website (
http://www.dec.org.uk/):

More than five million people have been affected. Families have been left without enough food, water, or shelter, while an estimated million homes have been destroyed or damaged and around a million acres of cropland devastated.
The Disasters Emergency Committee agencies are Action Aid, British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision.
Public donations will be used for immediate needs such as food, clean water, medicines and shelter. But the scale of the devastation is so immense that a huge relief and reconstruction effort will be needed over the coming months.

Latest News

Estates is saying we should have access to rehearsal rooms and equipment by late December, so hopefully everything will be in place for the New Year. We shall be situated in the building devoted to the Sports/Drama/Students Union. I'm very much looking forward to getting the groups up and running, and welcoming new participants.

For Sale: One of the Post Grad students has a guitar amp for sale, and I have some items for sale too, so go to www.rmguitar.info/instruments.htm for more info if interested.

Still More Delays

Unfortunately, we still don't have any rehearsal space or storage area for our equipment, and current rumours imply that we might not be able to do much before the Christmas break. It was my intention to have a concert in December, but that seems unlikely.

The good news is that I have been approached by quite a few new students and staff who have expressed an interest and willingness to get involved with any music that is happening - so the future looks good. We just need to get started.

The Open Day seems to have been a success. I had many potential students showing interest. They seemed very impressed with the new campus.

Another piece of good news - the Baby Grand Piano has arrived! Unfortunately, it is in an area which is out of bounds to all but a couple of staff - but that should change quite soon. Fingers crossed.

More news as I get it.

Delay

Unfortunately it looks as though we might not get started before the end of November. The good news is that a few new students have been in touch, seeking to join the groups. We all just have to be patient.

James Robertson has told me that the Choir of QMU will now not commence until the New Year.

Groups that will definitely be running are the Jazz-Blues Band, The Traditional Music Group, the Acoustic Music Group, and I have high hopes for a new Baroque Ensemble, Recorder Group and the Guitar Ensemble. Timetabling is always an issue, so watch this space.

New Term - New Campus

Normally at this time of year I would be busy organising the ensembles, but the move to the new (and wonderful) campus has caused a few teething problems. Hopefully we will get things sorted by mid October. I will be sending out a Moderator message via the university email system, so please look out for it. We require space to store equipment, and space to rehearse in.

My desk is 028 on L3, should you need to see me. Otherwise just email (I read it every day - almost!) me :

Videos from March concert

Finally, I 've managed to get the edited videos online here: http://www.qmuc.ac.uk/qmusic/videos.htm

The quality of image and sound is not great, but the performances are very good. Sound is very difficult to capture through a digital video camera, especially when it is emitting from different sound sources. We'll see if we can improve production standards in the future.

Some of the students have now left QM, so it is nice to have a video of them letting their hair down.

Everyone now looking ahead to the new campus. As I write, I have no idea where I will have a desk, or where the groups will rehearse. We'll manage somehow. It's impossible to plan for all contingencies beforehand, so a 'wait and see' policy is in place. I'll keep you posted.

Great Concert

Got some great photos and videos of the concert, last night, which I'll upload asap. It was a great success - another sellout, and another variety show. The talent we have at QM! I'm very impressed. There are a few performers (they must know who they are) who could be professionals. Some equally-important contributions came from near-beginners. Brilliant.

Videos and soundfiles to follow.

Concert soon!

Just over one week to go to the staff-student concert (Wednesday, March 28, 6pm to 7.30, Theatre, Corstorphine Campus) and the groups are really beginning to pull it all together. Despite a few worries, everything seems on track. The main problem, as ever, is performers finding time away from busy work or study schedules, and unfortunately there are a couple who have been to every rehearsal but can't make the gig. However, the end destination is not always
more important than the journey, and these individuals have contributed a great deal. There are also a couple of performers who have been absent for an entire month, but who intend to perform. We look forward to their return, and hope the jet-lag doesn't cause them to sleep in!

There will be performances of Javanese folk songs - possibly a first for Scotland. A Bengali poem sung to the tune of Ye Banks and Braes - ditto. Two world premiers by the Traditional Music Group - including their own first public performance. Some acoustic blues which should really only be performed after the 9pm watershed...

The proposed Soul band didn't quite materialise this term, but the jazz ensemble have teamed up with the electric blues band, and will perform two classics by Herbie Hancock, and another by tenor-sax giant, Sonny Rollins. Last week we experimented with free jazz, with some of the performers reveling in it, while others thought it mad...we might indulge in it for a minute or two as a prelude to Hancock's Watermelon Man.

As usual, a real variety show, with something for everyone!

QM has a new baby!

Well, a Baby Grand Piano, that is. It arrived from Bell College, Hamilton, this lunchtime, and has been situated in the foyer at Corstorphine Campus. It's arrival marks a significant step for music at QM. We hope to have concerts by staff and students, as well as visiting artists, both here and at the new campus. Our own resident classical concert pianist, Cameron Murdoch, will perform the inaugural concert on 9th May, but you might hear him practising during his lunch breaks.

The piano will sit undisturbed for a couple of weeks as the strings settle after the flit. It also requires some minor repair work. Eventually it will be available for booking for practice and rehearsals. To book the piano for half-hour slots, contact me in the first instance: music@qmu.ac.uk - I will instruct the key holder to sign out the key. More details on request.

Needless (?) to say, cups of coffee, bags, etc, etc should NOT be placed on top of the piano!

Staff Party Gig

The staff of QMU had a party on Thursday, and QM Blue were invited to perform for an hour as the evening commenced. I'm really proud of my musicians, who were pretty much faultless, and the vocals of Vikki Elliott were as professional as anything I've heard. If there was a problem, it is that we were on first, before the audience had a time to loosen up (a metaphor for being sloshed!). Most of them had a drink in one hand and a plate in the other, making enthusiastic applause very difficult. If we had been performing later on, I'm sure Lou, our breathtakingly-brilliant bass player, would have indulged in some crowd surfing!

Javanese songs

Today I was sung to in Javanese by Yeni, a student from Java (of course). Yeni is only here for three months, yet is happy to share part of her culture. She will be singing two songs for the March 28th concert. In formal settings, these songs might be accompanied by a gamelan orchestra (tuned percussion), and sometimes nowadays in pop settings with synthesisers and drum machines. But occasionally a singer might just accompany herself with simple chords on a guitar or ukelele. So, this same concert will see your Musician In Residence make his debut as an accompanist for Javanese songs. Stranger things have happened...and ARE happening.

QM Blue gig notice

There is a staff party at The Hub (top of the Royal Mile) on Thursday 22nd February to celebrate the change from QMUC to QMU, and QM Blue (our jazz and blues band) have been invited to play. Doors open at 8pm, and we shall be playing from then for an hour as folk enter. The band are really up for it and have resurected some of the songs from last term. Listen out for our super-funky take on 'Watermellon Man' by Herbie Hancock, and remember to arrive early so as not to miss our set.

The concert by staff and students on March 28th (Corstorphine Theatre, 6pm) is taking shape, and will include folk songs from Java, sung in Javanese, more Indian singing by Sumi, jazz songs, traditional music, blues and songs from the courts of Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI - the usual variety show. There are also a couple of QM bands, unrelated to QMusic, who will be given a chance to shine. Looking forward to hearing them.

The Edinburgh Festival is not the only International Festival we have here in Edinburgh...

The 4th International Festival of Middle Eastern Spirituality and Peace will start very soon. All the details can be found here (the brochure can be viewed as a PDF): http://www.eicws.org/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,39/Itemid,29/

It includes concerts by great artists, and poetry readings, plays, talks, dance, etc, etc. Workshops too - I hope to be attending one on Moorish-Andalusian music.

Islam and Music – a personal reflection

Islam and Music – a personal reflection by Rob MacKillop
Thursday 1st February, Room 354, Corstorphine Campus, 5.30pm – to 6.30pm
The Islamic Society of Queen Margaret University present a talk with music by Musician In Residence, Rob MacKillop. Rob studied Sufi music in Istanbul and Morocco while researching historical musical connections between East and West.
Free event. All welcome. Refreshments available.

The move by some students to help bridge the divisions in our cultures can only be applauded. I am honoured to be asked to present this talk, which will focus on my own experiences of this rich and beautiful music. This will not be an academic paper, but an enthusiast's recounting of his attempts to understand and appreciate the music of another culture. I'll be showing a couple of instruments and playing recordings, including my own response to the 9/11 tragedy, which occurred when I was studying in Casablanca. Hopefully both Islamic and non-Islamic staff and students will find something to interest and move them.

Hope to see you there!

1st week of new term

On Tuesday we had the first meeting of the acoustic music group, with a great turnout including accordion (Southern-fryed), flute, guitars, keyboard, bass and singer. Hopefully we'll get a couple more singers and attempt some gospel-style songs.

After that we had The Helicon Ensemble - created to give singers something to do while the main two choirs take time off. There is enough interest to keep this group going, but we are having a problem finding a time and venue that suits all those interested (singers, harpsichord, recorders, guitars). It's proving to be a big problem, one which will have to be solved soon.

Last night, Wednesday, saw the first meeting of the MegaJam Band. It was great to see new faces: two new singers, one new guitarist and one new trumpeter - alongside the usual layabouts: sax, trumpet, trombone, guitars, bass, keyboard, singers. We had a couple of read-throughs of RESEPECT by Aretha Franklin (actually written by Otis Redding), which showed promise, and the horn section learned how to improvise accompaniments to a blues. Some of it sounded amazing!

Now for the Guitar Class...

Traditional Music up and running

Last night saw the first rehearsal for the QM Traditional Music Group. I was very impressed with the turnout, and the fact that we read through about six tunes with a fair degree of competence. Three fiddlers, flute, two guitars, two tin whistles and keyboard. We could do with someone banging a drum! I expect a couple more fiddlers to join next week.

The first piece we read through was 'March: Queen Margaret College' by the late Tom Anderson, the most famous Shetland fiddler before Ally Bain. I plan to write, 'Jig: Queen Margaret University' to complement it!

A good start. More members welcome.

The Helicon Ensemble

The Helicon Ensemble – 16th-century Scottish Court Songs for voices and instruments (keyboard, guitar/lute, recorders, violin, etc)

The Choir of QMUC and the Back Row Singers will not be meeting this term, so I’ve taken the opportunity to create a small ensemble to explore the 16th-century Scottish part-song repertory.

The songs are a mixture of Scots poetry by the likes of Alexander Montgomerie, and French-influenced rhythms and melodies. The Scots-English is not at all difficult to read, and I will give translations and pronunciations where necessary. The melodies are simple, beautiful and memorable after a couple of sing-throughs.

Rehearsal times: I have booked two periods, one lunchtimes and one Tuesday evenings, both at Corstorphine (apologies to non-Corstorphine singers. Soon we shall all be under one roof.) If you can only attend one rehearsal period, that’s fine.

Monday lunchtimes, 12.30 to 1.00, Conference Centre A
January 29
February 19/26
March 5/12/26

Tuesday evenings, 6.30 to 7.30, Conference Centre A
January 23/30
February 6/13/20/27
March 6/13/20/27

For those interested, I have recorded a CD of all of Montgomerie’s songs (not entitled ‘The Full Monty’!):
http://www.sanctuaryclassics.com/product_details.php?productId=5974

So, singers and instrumentalists are welcome to come along. Either let me know by email (
music@qmuc.ac.uk) or just turn up. Please put the above dates in your diary. It’s ok if you miss two or three!

New Term: January to March 2007

This term we shall be working towards the last ever concert at the Corstorphine Campus before we head off to our nice shiny new campus near Mussleburgh. I've added a side link on the right-hand side of this page to the group activities, rehearsal times and rehearsal venues for this term.

One of the difficulties I've encountered in this post is communication with students, and to that end I'll be putting time into developing the QMusic web presence on the main QMUC website. We have a very limited presence there at the moment. From the front page, click on Community and then QMusic.

Community will be the key word when we move to New Craighall, as we try to engage the local populace in our musical activities. I intend to open up the groups to members of the local communities.

Before that, however, we shall be concentrating on working towards the March concert. Monday 22 January sees the first meeting of the QM Traditional Music Group, so if you play fiddle, whistle, bodhran, accordion, guitar, etc, or sing traditional songs, please get in touch or turn up.

Remember, you can leave comments here, or email me: music@qmuc.ac.uk

Radio History of Scotland's Music

A monumental radio series has begun on the history of Scottish music. You can hear it online here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/music/scotlandsmusic/episodes/episode_00.shtml. I am delighted to have been invited to contribute. I don't know which episode (50 programmes, broadcast weekly) feature the lute in Scotland. The guide is the incomparable, Dr John Purser, composer, poet and crofter. Well worth tuning in to!
